What this color test page checks

The colour test page is built around four diagnostic elements that together give you a complete picture of your printer’s output quality.

Solid colour blocks

Four solid rectangles — cyan, magenta, yellow, and black — printed at 100% coverage. If any block looks faded, patchy, or absent, that specific ink channel has a problem. This is the fastest way to confirm whether a cartridge is empty, clogged, or misinstalled.

Gradient strips

Each colour fades smoothly from 100% density to 0% across a horizontal band. Visible banding — horizontal stripes in what should be a smooth fade — indicates a partially blocked nozzle row rather than a fully dead channel. It is one of the most common inkjet faults and often clears after one print-head cleaning cycle.

Colour blending section

Overlapping areas of cyan-magenta (violet), cyan-yellow (green), and magenta-yellow (red) test whether your printer layers colours accurately. Muddy or shifted blended tones often point to a registration issue, where the print head is slightly out of position between colour passes.

Text at multiple sizes

Fine text lines from 6pt upward check that colours do not bleed into each other at small sizes. Colour bleeding on text usually means the paper is absorbing too much ink — try switching to a higher-quality paper before adjusting any printer settings.

How to read your colour test results

Once the test page comes out, hold it under good lighting at a slight angle and look for:

  • Missing colour blocks — one channel is blocked or empty
  • Horizontal banding in gradients — partial nozzle blockage; run a cleaning cycle
  • Colour bleeding on the text section — too much ink for the paper type
  • Uneven density across a single colour block — print head misalignment
  • Correct colours but low overall saturation — the printer may be in draft or economy mode

If the test page looks perfect but regular documents still look wrong, the issue is in your application or print settings, not the printer hardware itself.

Compatible printer types

The colour test page PDF works with any printer accepting A4 or US letter-size paper:

  • Inkjet printers — both home models and wide-format photo printers
  • Laser colour printers — the CMYK dot pattern will appear sharp and precise
  • All-in-one printers with copy and scan functions
  • Wireless and network printers — print from your phone or tablet browser

Thermal printers are not suitable for this colour test. Thermal paper uses heat rather than ink and produces black-only output. Use the dedicated thermal test page for thermal printers instead.

How to print a color test page

Click the download button above. The PDF opens in your browser. Then:

  • On Windows: press Ctrl + P. Select your printer and make sure colour printing is on — not set to greyscale or black and white — in the printer preferences.
  • On Mac: press Cmd + P, click Show Details, and check that the colour options are set to colour rather than greyscale.
  • On mobile: open the PDF in your browser, tap the share icon, and select Print.

Set paper size to A4 or Letter and print at 100% scale. Do not use Fit to Page — scaling the PDF distorts the gradient measurements and makes the test less accurate.

Troubleshooting after a failed colour test

One colour is completely missing

Check the ink level for that specific cartridge first. If it is not empty, remove the cartridge, gently wipe the copper contact strip with a dry lint-free cloth, and reinstall it. If the problem continues, run the deep cleaning cycle from your printer’s maintenance menu — but note that deep cleaning uses a significant amount of ink, so avoid running it more than twice in a row.

Colours look correct but everything is too light

Open your printer preferences and check whether it is set to economy, draft, or fast mode. These modes deliberately reduce ink use. Switch to normal or standard quality for everyday documents.

The test page prints in black and white

Your printer is set to greyscale. On Windows, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click your printer, select Printing Preferences, and find the Colour setting. On Mac, check under Colour Matching or Print Quality in the print dialog.

Most Frequently Asked Questions About Color Printer Test Page

Yes. There is no charge, no account, and no watermark. Click the download button and it’s yours immediately.

Standard 80gsm copy paper gives you a reliable baseline. If you want to check photo quality, use the paper you actually plan to print on — a test on plain paper will not reflect how the printer performs on glossy photo stock.

White gaps or streaks running across the page indicate clogged nozzles. Run the printer’s automatic nozzle check first, then a standard cleaning cycle if the check confirms blockages.
